Air takes up the space in a balloon, water takes up the space in a beaker and when you sit in a chair you take up the space on that chair. Solids have shape, liquids take the shape of their container, while gas spreads out.

The pH is a means of measuring the acid-base strenght of solutions. The pH of a solution shows the hydrogen ion concentration (in molecules per liter).
